This is a question that often arises among students of Ifá, especially those who have received Ìṣẹ́fà and later proceed to Ìtẹ́fà. However, before attempting to answer it, it is important to understand that practices vary across Yorùbáland.

Not every lineage, temple, or Ilé Ifá approaches Ìṣẹ́fà in the same way. Some lineages reveal an Odù during Ìṣẹ́fà, prescribe taboos, provide specific spiritual instructions, and perform certain rites associated with the consecrated Ìkin. Other lineages do not. Some do not reveal Odù, assign taboos, or involve blood offerings during the process and after. Each lineage has its own valid reasons, teachings, and traditions for what it does.

In my own lineage, we do not give an Odù, taboos, or blood offerings to a consecrated Ìkin "Ìṣẹ́fà". This is based on our understanding of what Ìṣẹ́fà represents and what should properly be reserved for Ìtẹ́fà. However, the fact that another lineage does things differently does not invalidate their practice. Diversity of practice has always existed within the broader isese tradition.

With that understanding established, how then does the Odù of Ìṣẹ́fà connect with the Odù of Ìtẹ́fà?

My answer is simple: every Odù speaks regardless.

Whether an Odù appears during Ìṣẹ́fà or during any other divination, it is speaking about realities that exist within the life of the individual at that moment. Odù are not isolated events. They are revelations of patterns, conditions, possibilities, warnings, opportunities, and spiritual truths. Therefore, when an Odù appears, it has something meaningful to communicate.

Many people mistakenly assume that the Odù revealed during Ìṣẹ́fà must necessarily become the same Odù revealed during Ìtẹ́fà, or that one must directly lead into the other. This is not always the case. An Odù revealed during Ìṣẹ́fà may be highlighting immediate conditions, spiritual instructions, character issues, blessings, challenges, or developmental themes that are active at that particular stage of life.

When Ìtẹ́fà eventually occurs, the principal Odù received during initiation may reveal deeper dimensions of destiny, life purpose, spiritual obligations, ancestral patterns, and long-term developmental paths. Yet even then, there is often resonance between them because all Odù are communicating within the same life and the same spiritual journey.

The relationship between the two is not necessarily one of identity but of continuity. One may introduce themes that the other expands upon. One may reveal conditions that prepare the individual for understanding the deeper revelations that come later. Sometimes the connections are obvious; at other times they only become clear after years of study and experience.

It is also important to remember that no single Odù exists in isolation. The entire corpus of Ifá is interconnected. Every Odù contains Enlightenment relevant to human existence. This is why serious students of Ifá study broadly rather than limiting themselves only to a single sign. Your personal Odù serve as your primary manuscript, but every Odù has something to teach.

The purpose is not to become overly concerned with comparing one Odù to another. The greater task is to understand what each Odù is saying, why it is speaking, and how its teachings apply to your life. Ifá is a living system of Enlightenment, and every Odù that appears is participating in the ongoing conversation between your Orí, your destiny, and your journey through life.

Therefore, whether an Odù appears during Ìṣẹ́fà, Ìtẹ́fà, or ordinary divination, respect it, study it, and learn from it. Every Odù speaks. Every Odù teaches. Every Odù reveals something necessary for the evolution of the individual.
